Blaze came into us back in November 2024 after coming to us as a stray but it's taken us a while to ensure he is ready to find a new home as he was quite a nervous Nelly and needed lots of time to decompress, make friends and get some training.
Blaze has come on in leaps and bounds in confidence, once your Blaze's friend he becomes a big overgrown puppy and is very puppylike in his mannerisms, he gets super excited and has to grab a toy as soon as he see's you!
In the playpen he loves to run round, he will chase a ball and 9 times out of 10 he will bring it back to you, he never goes to snatch it from you and will sit, paw and lie down when told in anticipation of the ball being thrown again!
On the lead is where he does need some work, he's not the best, he can get quite strong and then thinks it's a good idea to try and run... loose lead is not in his vocab yet. We are working with him and trying to introduce him to a head collar to help him but this may well be something for a new owner to continue working with. We do usually suggest an experienced handler rather rely on a handlers strength but as Blaze is a big strong boy his handler will need to be strong enough to hold on should he want to try eloping out in front!
We do know Blaze is incredibly affectionate, he loves his fuss, bum rubs, scratches and any human contact he can get!
Blaze is great with other dogs, he has met lots since being here and when he finally lifts his nose from sniffing he says hi, has a sniff and is very easily lead away or continue walking with. We do think he could live with another dog, one that isn't too over the top but would compliment his relaxed nature around other dogs otherwise he will be mightily fine as an only dog.
The only other area that may need work would be strangers coming into his home, we only say this as he can sometimes guard his kennel with some staff but not all (some staff he will happily invite them in, share his bed and give them his toys!), he is grand meeting any stranger out and about on lead, he's come into our office and met everyone with a waggy tail and he is now starting to go out with volunteers but he can just be wary of men. We hope that the stresses of kennel will be left behind when he leaves to a new home and problems never rear their heads again but we would suggest any new owner to give him time to settle, perhaps his own space, meet strangers outside first and pop him on a lead so he has every opportunity to succeed and not to fail.
With the right home Blaze will be an incredible dog, he loves to learn, he loves to be told he's a good boy and he has a heart of gold - he just needs someone who understands him and continue the work we have started here.
